NFTs showcased another week of 'high highs' and 'low lows' this week, with the U.S. Justice Department clearly paying attention, and some high-flying NFT series sales. Let's review these stories and more from the past seven days of NFT activity. XCOPY unleashed open edition mints as well as dedicated auctions, all on NFT platform Nifty Gateway. Chinese authorities have doubled down from past efforts to hinder crypto mining in the country, and now have removed NFT projects from the platform. As our team covered earlier this week, while mainland China has exhibited a total prohibition on cryptocurrencies, the Beijing government has not banned NFTs specifically. Cool Cats have become a staple in NFTs, and while certainly not as recognizable as Bored Apes or CryptoPunks, for anyone paying close attention to NFTs, they've likely heard or seen Cool Cats at some point. In its western borders of Tibet and Xinjiang, China is modernising its military facilities to address internal and external security challenges. The research paper ChinaPower suggests that four more airports in Tibet are being built by China. Among them, Lhuntse Airport, Ngari-Burang Airport, and Shigatse Tingri Airport are all located within 60 kilometres of the China-India border, which will fill up big gaps along the Indian border where there were no airports previously. In the last five years, the government of Xinjiang has renovated 15 airports, military or dual-use facilities account for seven of them. The research paper also stated that one such airport is Hotan Airport, which is a significant dual-use airport located approximately 240 kilometres west of the Line of Actual Control. A surface-to-air missile complex is being updated less than 5 km southeast of the main airport area, bolstering the air defences at the airport and neighbouring areas. The build-up is crucial because the Xinjiang and Tibet regions are not only remote from China's industrial east coast, but they also border 11 countries with which China has long-standing territorial disputes.

Security firm Kaspersky Lab has been identified as a national security threat by the FCC, the first time a Russian company has been included on the regulator's "Covered List.". Updated on Friday, the Covered List contains companies and organizations that the FCC deems "Pose an unacceptable risk to U.S. national security." The FCC said on Friday that it is now including the Russian Kaspersky Labs on the list. Kaspersky joins alongside China Mobile and China Telecom as new additions to the list, reports Bleeping Computer. Under the list's rules, companies in the U.S. are not allowed to use any subsidies obtained through the FCC's Universal Service Fund to acquire any products or services from list organizations. "The FCC plays a critical role in securing our nation's communications networks, and keeping our Covered List up to date is an important tool we have at our disposal to do just that" said FCC Commissioner Brendan Carr. Adding the three firms to the list "Will help secure our networks from threats posed by Chinese and Russian state-backed entities seeking to engage in espionage and otherwise harm America's interests." The inclusion on the list is not the toughest restriction the U.S. government nor its agencies has applied against Kaspersky.

The announcement by an official of the Civil Aviation Administration of China at a late-night news conference was followed by a brief moment of silence. The flight from the city of Kunming in southwestern China was flying at 29,000 feet on Monday when it suddenly nosedived into a mountainous area, shortly before it would have started its descent to the airport in Guangzhou, a provincial capital and export manufacturing hub near Hong Kong on China's southeastern coast. Construction excavators dug into the crash site Saturday in the search for wreckage, remains and the second black box. Workers wearing knee-high rubber boots used shovels and other hand tools to sift through the earthen slopes in a 20-meter-deep pit left by the plane. An air traffic controller tried to contact the pilots several times after seeing the plane's altitude drop sharply but got no reply, officials have said. China Eastern, one of China's four major airlines, and its subsidiaries have grounded all of their 737-800 aircraft, a total of 223 planes.

On Friday, the Federal Communications Commission added Russia's Kaspersky Lab to its "Covered List," labeling the cybersecurity firm an "Unacceptable" national security risk to the US. The move marks the first time the agency has blacklisted a Russian company. With the decision, US companies can't use subsidies from the FCC's $8 billion Universal Service Fund for supporting telecom deployments in rural and underserved communities to purchase products and services from Kaspersky. All seven other organizations on the list hail from China, with among the most notable being Huawei and ZTE. FCC Commissioner Brendan Car said the designation would help the US secure its networks from "Threats posed by Chinese and Russian state-backed entities seeking to engage in espionage and otherwise harm America's interests." The two other companies the FCC added to the list on Friday were China Telecom and China Mobile, both of which were already subject to previous restrictions. "This decision is not based on any technical assessment of Kaspersky products - that the company continuously advocates for - but instead is being made on political grounds," Kaspersky said following the announcement. The company noted it was ready to work with the FCC and other US government agencies to address any regulatory concerns. A 2017 order by former President Donald Trump had already banned the federal government from using Kaspersky software. The FCC did not cite Russia's recent invasion of Ukraine for this most recent move.

Chinese officials confirmed on Saturday the death of all 132 passengers who were onboard the China Eastern Airlines flight that crashed in the southern province of Guangxi on Monday as they continue a frantic search to determine what caused the tragic accident. Chinese state media outlet China Daily reported the deaths of 123 passengers and nine crew members on the Boeing 737-800 plane, citing confirmation from the country's Civil Aviation Administration. Rescue personnel had combed through mountainous, forested land and deployed rescue vehicles this week when searching for any survivors, but reported they had seen no signs of life. ADVERTISEMENT. Investigators have retrieved 183 pieces of equipment from the crash site, including one black box containing communications between the plane's three pilots, which would play back the final moments of the flight before the plane nosedived. Chinese investigators are still searching for a second black box containing a flight data recorder.

China Eastern Flight 5375 was carrying 123 passengers and nine crew members.
All 132 people on doomed China Eastern plane confirmed dead - New York Daily News All 123 passengers and nine crew members on board a China Eastern flight when it slammed into a mountainside were confirmed dead Saturday. China Eastern Flight 5735 was en route from Kunming to Guangzhou in southern China on Monday when it rapidly lost altitude in a mountainous area near the city of Wuzhou, just an hour west of Guangzhou. China Eastern grounded all of its Boeing 737-800 planes shortly after the crash. While the search for survivors was called off, emergency personnel continued scouring the area of the crash for the second black box, which recorded flight data. Online flight tracking data showed the plane was cruising at around 29,000 feet when it suddenly plummeted from the sky. Monday's crash was the deadliest airplane disaster in Greater China since a 2002 crash involving a flight from Taiwan to Hong Kong that killed 225 people. It was the deadliest crash on Mainland China since 1994.
Flight MU5735 was travelling from the city of Kunming, in south-west China, to the port city of Guangzhou when it plummeted from cruising altitude and crashed in a heavily forested area of Guangxi region.
Chinese authorities say all 132 passengers and crew on a China Eastern Airlines plane that crashed this week died. Nine crew members and 123 passengers were on the plane when it crashed. The cockpit voice recorder has been found and sent to Beijing for examination. Authorities are still searching through the wreckage for the flight data recorder. It is still searching for the second black box, or flight data recorder. The team is also seeking the data module from the flight data recorder itself. The search team has been digging for plane parts in heavy mud both by hand and with machinery.
Construction excavators continued to dig into the crash site Saturday in the search for wreckage, remains and the plane's second black box.

"It's no longer possible to watch any content starring Keanu Reeves in China," reports PC Magazine, "And searching for his name returns no results from search engines." The AV Club explains: Earlier this year, about a month after the release of The Matrix Resurrections, Reeves was announced as a performer at the 35th annual Tibet House Benefit Concert. Tencent and iQiyi have removed at least 19 of the actor's movies from their streaming platforms, and performing a search for either his English name or its Chinese translation will return zero results from search engines, apparently. It's unclear who ordered the deletions, China's regulatory agencies or platforms acting proactively to remove potentially troublesome content, Yu said.... "Why all of a sudden did they decide to take this measure at this exact moment? It's a question we as outsiders might never be able to answer," Yu said. The ban on Reeves' past works bodes poorly for the China prospects of his upcoming projects. These include animation "DC League of Super-Pets," starring Chinese fan favorite Dwayne Johnson, and the pandemic-delayed sequel "John Wick: Chapter 4," which appears to target mainland viewers with its top billing of Donnie Yen, the Hong Kong action star known for his expressions of loyalty to China's ruling Communist Party.... Despite the original trilogy's popularity, "The Matrix: Resurrections" was a flop in China even before it faced nationalist backlash, grossing only $13.6 million and notching just 5.7 out of 10 on the taste-making ratings platform Douban.
Rescue teams are still searching for the second black box at the site of the plane crash in Guangxi.
Image source, CGTN VIA REUTERS. Chinese officials have confirmed that all 132 passengers and crew died when flight MU5735 crashed on Monday in southern China. The China Eastern flight was flying from Kunming to Guangzhou when it nose-dived and crashed in a heavily-forested area in Guangxi. Rescue teams said they had identified 120 of the victims so far through DNA analysis, aviation officials said. Hu Zhenjiang, deputy director-general of China's civil aviation administration, said the search would continue for the remains of the victims and parts of plane wreckage, Chinese news website Sina reported. Aircraft manufacturer Boeing - which made the 737-800 jet - said on Saturday its technical team is supporting the US National Transportation Safety Board and China's civil aviation administration with the investigation, Reuters reports. Following the crash, China's President Xi Jinping called for a full-scale investigation. The crash is China's most deadly aviation incident in nearly three decades, and has prompted a national outpouring of grief.
Search and rescue teams have identified the DNA of 120 victims of the crash, officials said, as crews continue to search for the plane’s second black box containing flight data recordings.
All 132 passengers and crew on board the China Eastern Airlines flight that crashed in Guangxi province Monday have died, Chinese state media quoted an official from the Civil Aviation Administration of China as saying Saturday. Hu Zhenjiang, deputy director of the Civil Aviation Administration of China, said search and rescue teams have identified the DNA of 120 victims of the crash, Reuters reports, citing Chinese state media. Xi said crews were still searching for the aircraft's second black box, which contains flight data recordings, state newspaper China Daily reports. Reuters reports search teams had located an emergency location transmitter close to where the second black box was installed in the plane, signaling crews may be closer to finding the flight data recordings. An hour into its flight from Kunming to Guangzhou on Monday, China Eastern Airlines Flight MU5735 suddenly plunged into a near-vertical drop, according to flight-tracking website FlightRadar24. China Eastern has temporarily grounded its 737-800 fleet to complete a "Large-scale safety inspection." The Boeing 737-800 is a popular aircraft with a good safety record, though the model has been involved in fatal crashes in the past. Boeing admitted full responsibility for the 2019 crash of the newest model of the aircraft, the 737 MAX, in Ethiopia in 2019, which followed a crash of the model in 2018.

China and Nepal will conduct a feasibility study to construct a high-voltage power transmission line across the Himalayas to facilitate the exchange of electric power, officials said on Saturday.
KATHMANDU, March 26 - China and Nepal will conduct a feasibility study to construct a high-voltage power transmission line across the Himalayas to facilitate the exchange of electric power, officials said on Saturday. Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi and his Nepali counterpart Narayan Khadka witnessed the signing of an agreement following talks in Nepal's capital Kathmandu. Nepal faces power shortages during the dry season and the planned grid would alleviate the problem through imports from China. In recent years Beijing has spent millions of dollars building or upgrading highways, airports, power plants and hospitals in Nepal, eager to gain influence on the country which acts as a natural buffer between it and India. In 2019, China and Nepal agreed to conduct a feasibility study for a railway network under Beijing's Belt and Road Initiative that Nepal joined in 2017. Wang's visit comes a month after Nepal's parliament approved a controversial $500 million infrastructure grant from the United States. Wang arrived in Nepal on Friday after a trip to India.

Ukraine crisis is uniting democracies in Europe and Pacific but complicating relationships with China, India and Gulf states. Sat 26 Mar 2022 13.08 GMT. "Decide who you are with" Volodymyr Zelenskiy told the European council, pointing to a choice that is becoming increasingly hard to avoid, as the sheer violence of Russia's invasion of Ukraine crystallises the division of the world into two camps. US officials have pleased to see how the invasion of Ukraine has welded together US allies in Europe and the Pacific in a global cause, with Japan, Australia, South Korea and New Zealand all joining in with sanctions. "There is a ubiquitous quality of the appeal of Ukraine and that cuts through barriers and it's profound. \u200b\u200bIt transcends both Europe and Asia," a senior US official said. The Ukrainian president does his homework on his fellow leaders and will have been well aware that Orbán is facing a strong challenge from opposition leader Péter Márki-Zay, who is using is the unpopularity of the prime minister's ambivalent stance on Ukraine to his advantage, accusing Orbán of having brought "Shame on Hungary". Not only did the government of Narendra Modi abstain at the UN, failing to even mention Russia in its bland description of the unfolding catastrophe in Ukraine, it is also working towards setting up a rouble-rupee trading mechanism that will help Moscow avoid dollar-oriented sanctions. The Ukraine war is a strategic nightmare for Delhi, which has long seen Russia, and before it the Soviet Union, as a security partner of last resort.

Earlier this year, Fortis Analysis released details on the proposal by Fufeng Group, a CCP-connected company, to build a wet corn mill and amino acid production facility in Grand Forks, ND. In conducting further research, interviewing local residents, and wor…
Trans-Asia Capital Resources Ltd. is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Fufeng Group, which has its principal place of business in Junan in the Shandong Province of China. In simplified form, if the secret national security entity in mainland China or Hong Kong creates any pretext whatsoever, it will be able to force Fufeng USA to reveal all personal details of any employee, contractor, or even guests of the corn mill, regardless of the laws of the United States. In the same annual report referenced earlier, Fufeng Group Limited lists an interesting disclosure: a 30% ownership stake in Jilin COFCO Biomaterial Co Ltd. This joint venture between Fufeng Group and China Oil and Foodstuffs Corporation is notable because COFCO is the largest agribusiness in China, and is a 100% state-owned enterprise under the management of the hyperpowerful State-owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission of the State Council. As just one example of the new risk to American stakeholders from this expanded enforcement against China's human rights abuse, Fufeng Group lists in its annual report that coal is the primary energy feedstock for its corn mills in China. One of Fufeng's largest plants, Neimenggu Fufeng Biotechnologies, is located in Hohhot City in Inner Mongolia. Should an investigation be raised by Commerce, State, or Treasury into the activities of any Fufeng Group subsidiary in connection to forced labor, it is highly likely that Fufeng would be unable to satisfy the rebuttable presumption of participation in the forced labor and abusive regimes in place in China. This would trigger automatic sanctions not only against Fufeng Group in China, but also their international subsidiaries such as First Biotech and Fufeng USA. Such sanctions would make it impossible for banks to lend to any of the affected entities in the United States or conduct normal business operations, shutting down the entire project in Grand Forks and invalidating the letter of credit the city proclaims as providing a no-risk guarantee to local taxpayers the city has not wasted money chasing a pot of gold at the end of the CCP's genocidal rainbow.
"But whether the yuan could be perceived as a store of value — a safe haven during uncertainty or war — that is a much more difficult thing."
China's yuan eventually could develop into a reputable global reserve currency, but Beijing would have to drastically loosen its grip on the economy, according to a Chinese economy expert, who also sees some upside to a downgrade in the US dollar's status. Already, upwards of 70 central banks hold some yuan as a reserve currency, while many African countries and some in the Middle East regularly use it for transactions, he noted. For now, greenbacks comprise 60% of global reserves versus the yuan's 2.5%. And in global payments volume, the dollar accounts for 40% while the yuan has about 3%, even though China is the world's second biggest economy, trailing closely behind the US, Philipson said. China would have to open up its market and loosen government oversight, Chen explained, noting that historically, no currency that's been heavily controlled has become dominant in global reserves. China also needs to refrain from currency manipulation, like devaluing the yuan to boost exports, he added. The yuan must become as trustworthy as the dollar. Chen said also said a more prominent yuan would have another benefit, as the emergence of multiple global reserve currencies would provide a hedge against the collapse of any single currency.
America cannot allow Russia's ongoing invasion of Ukraine to distract from the threat posed by the Communist Party of China.
As Russia's military makes advances through Kyiv, the growing threat of China looms while our President does little to deter it. The Biden administration needs to take the decisive, proactive steps against China now. Failing to establish a meaningful deterrence against China will enable an invasion of Taiwan during the Biden administration. The threat China poses to the U.S. cannot be treated like just another snowflake in a blizzard of crises. DAN SULLIVAN AND MIKE GALLAGHER: UKRAINE WAR OFFERS VITAL LESSONS ON DETERRING CHINA FROM INVADING TAIWAN. China is currently Russia's largest trading partner, and the military relationship between the two continues to strengthen. Intelligence reports have surfaced indicating Russia has asked China for direct military support and financial aid. While Chairman Xi and China's government deny it, the CCP has been coordinating directly with Russia and comparing notes as China has ambitions of annexing Taiwan even as Putin is now annexing Ukraine.

The top Republican on the House Intelligence Committee is calling for a classified briefing on the call last week between President Biden and Chinese President Xi Jinping, saying the panel needs to understand what consequences the Biden administration presented to Beijing should they choose to aid Russia in its invasion of Ukraine. During an interview with Fox News at the House Republican Issues Conference Thursday, Mike Turner, R-Ohio, said understanding what transpired on President Biden's call with Chinese President Xi Jinping is "Certainly relevant." BIDEN WARNS XI OF 'CONSEQUENCES' IF CHINA SUPPORTS RUSSIA, WHITE HOUSE SAYS. "Our committee has not been briefed on it and this is certainly relevant for our committee to understand both what the president laid out to China, and what President Xi's responses were on if the China should assist Russia militarily," Turner told Fox News. Turner formally requested a briefing from White House national security adviser Jake Sullivan Thursday, saying the call "Contained critical information relevant to the future of U.S.-China relations and the ongoing conflict in Ukraine." Biden spoke with Xi last Friday on a secure video call for nearly two hours. GOP REP. SCOTT PERRY SAYS 'WEAKNESS IS PROVOCATIVE,' WARNS BIDEN FOREIGN POLICY 'ENCOURAGES' ADVERSARIES. Meanwhile, the White House said Biden "Reiterated that U.S. policy on Taiwan has not changed, and emphasized that the United States continues to oppose any unilateral changes to the status quo." If Republicans take the majority of the House of Representatives after the midterm elections in November, Turner vowed to bring the focus of the House Intelligence Committee back to what it is "Intended to be" focused on.

The most critical hurdle confronting the biotech is avoiding having its shares delisted by the SEC.
Earlier this month, the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission identified five Chinese companies with listings on U.S. stock exchanges that could be delisted for not meeting audit requirements. This Chinese stock could skyrocket at least 85% over the next 12 months, according to Wall Street. The Chinese biotech stock emerged as a huge winner over much of the last six years. In the aftermath of the SEC's announcement earlier this month, the stock plunged more than 20%. BeiGene's shares bounced close to 34% on March 16, primarily because of news that Chinese officials were working with the SEC to resolve the audit issues. Wall Street analysts don't think that BeiGene will recapture its previous high over the next 12 months. There's no way that the stock will mount a sustained comeback if there isn't progress toward a resolution of the issues identified by the SEC. The company could also experience regulatory and/or clinical setbacks. With such a steep valuation, any bumps in the road could prevent BeiGene from meeting Wall Street's one-year price target.

We've already seen the Xiaomi 12 series launch both in China and globally too, but there was curiously no Xiaomi 12 Ultra this time round. Well, it seems as though the Chinese giant could be waiting on Sony, whose upcoming new sensor has just been leaked. Xiaomi is allegedly looking to use this Exmor IMX800 sensor in the Xiaomi 12 Ultra's main camera. In comparison, the Samsung GN2 sensor that Xiaomi used in the Mi 11 Ultra was a 50MP sensor with a 1/1.12-inch sensor. Just last year, we saw Sony themselves launch the Sony Xperia Pro-I, which packed a 1-inch sensor behind its 12MP, f/2.0-4.0 main camera, which also uses a Zeiss Tessar 24mm lens. As for the Xiaomi 12 Ultra itself, it's expected to come with a triple camera setup using that 50MP Sony Exmor IMX800 sensor flanked by a further two other 48MP cameras. If you don't want to wait for the Xiaomi 12 Ultra though, you can check out more about the Xiaomi 12 series in general here.

The FCC says that the Russian security firm has been "Deemed to pose an unacceptable risk to the national security of the United States or the security and safety of United States persons". What this means in practice is that Kaspersky is ineligible to receive FCC funding, joining companies such as Huawei and ZTE. Kaspersky has also been sanctioned by HackerOne, with its bug bounty program being indefinitely suspended. Announcing the addition of Kaspersky to its Covered List, the FCC said: "A Binding Operational Directive, issued by the Department of Homeland Security and published in the Federal Register on September 11, 2017, required certain federal agencies to remove 'Kaspersky-branded products' from federal information systems. More specifically, the BOD is a compulsory direction to federal, executive branch, departments and agencies for the purposes of safeguarding information and information systems; federal agencies are required to comply with BODs". Based on the required actions by federal agencies in response to the threats identified in the BOD, we interpret the BOD to be a finding from the Department of Homeland Security that Kaspersky-branded products pose an unacceptable risk to the national security of the United States. Further, by requiring federal agencies to remove Kaspersky-branded products we find that the Department of Homeland Security has determined that its products are capable of posing an unacceptable risk to the national security of the United States and its people. In particular, I am pleased that our national security agencies agreed with my assessment that China Mobile and China Telecom appeared to meet the threshold necessary to add these entities to our list. Kaspersky is disappointed with the decision by the Federal Communications Commission to prohibit certain telecommunications-related federal subsidies from being used to purchase Kaspersky products and services.
The United States and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) should hold dialogue with Russia, rather than start a new Cold War, Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Wang Wenbin said Friday.
BEIJING, March 25 - The United States and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization should hold dialogue with Russia, rather than start a new Cold War, Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Wang Wenbin said Friday. Ukraine should become a bridge for communication between the East and the West, rather than the frontline for major power rivalry, Wang told a regular press briefing. China proceeds from the merits of the matter itself on the Ukraine issue and makes effort to deescalate the situation, resolve the crisis and rebuild peace, he added. Noting that nothing is more precious than peace, Wang said the international community should encourage Russia and Ukraine to keep up the talks rather than the fighting, as the continuation and escalation of the conflict will only cause greater casualties and serve no one's interest. Ukraine's sovereignty and security should be upheld, and Russia's legitimate security concerns should also be respected. Europe's peace and stability should be defended, Wang said. Stressing that China's stance is the same as the aspirations of most countries, Wang said China opposes groundless accusations and suspicions targeting China, and will never be subject to pressure and coercion.

Jojo Riñoza and Jeoffrey Maitem for BenarNews 2022.03.25 - The Philippine Coast Guard said Friday it had seen more Filipino fishermen operating off a rich fishing ground in Manila's exclusive economic zone, describing this as a "Significant milestone" because China has effectively controlled South China Sea waters in that area for the past decade. In a statement, the coast guard confirmed "The increasing presence of Filipino fishermen" in the area and said that it had also kept watch and provided the Filipino fishermen with relief supplies. "Seeing more Filipino fishing boats in Bajo de Masinloc is a proof of our intensified efforts to safeguard Filipino fishermen who consider fishing as their primary source of livelihood," Abu said using the Filipino name for Scarborough Shoal, a triangular shaped rocky outcrop. The National Task Force for the West Philippine Sea stressed the need to encourage Filipino fishermen to catch fish in the traditional fishing grounds. In 2012, the Philippine Coast Guard engaged Chinese ships in a stand-off over the Scarborough Shoal. In June 2019, a Chinese vessel rammed a Filipino fishing boat in Reed Bank, another region in the South China Sea that lies within the Philippine exclusive economic zone. The Chinese crew left 22 Philippine fishermen stranded at sea until a passing Vietnamese boat rescued them.

By RFA Staff 2022.03.25 - China has accused the U.S. of intensifying spying activities in the disputed South China Sea after the U.S. Navy deployed three of its ocean surveillance vessels in the region. The third ocean surveillance ship, USNS Loyal, is in the sea east of Taiwan. The USNS Bowditch is a Pathfinder-class survey ship that has often been deployed in the South China Sea. The USNS Effective and USNS Loyal are both Victorious-class ocean surveillance ships. "China's survey ships do similar operations so in many ways, China's description of the American ships provides an insight into how China uses its survey ships," he said. China has four Yuanwang-class tracking ships in active operation, including Yuanwang-5 which entered service in 2007. In another development, the American expeditionary mobile base USS Miguel Keith entered the South China Sea on March 21, the Beijing-based South China Sea Strategic Situation Probing Initiative, a think tank, said.

Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida's whirlwind trip to Brussels to meet U.S. and European leaders was the latest sign of how the Asian country is committed to working with international allies and partners to decisively respond to Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Japan's tough line now contrasts with its tepid response to Russia's annexation of Crimea from Ukraine in 2014, reflecting its concern that any tolerance of the Kremlin's attempt to alter the status quo by force could only embolden China, which has grown more assertive in the Indo-Pacific. Questions remain as to whether the unprecedented level of sanctions unleashed by the world's leading democratic economies will pressure Russia to give up on its monthlong invasion and will help deter what could be the next Ukraine - Chinese military action against Taiwan. In lockstep with other G7 countries, Japan has imposed severe economic sanctions on Russia, including those targeting President Vladimir Putin and business oligarchs who are enabling the war, restrictions on transactions with its central bank and exclusions of certain banks from the world's main international payment network. Ken Jimbo, a professor of international relations at Japan's Keio University, said Tokyo's moves may not be as dramatic as Berlin's policy shifts in the wake of the Ukraine crisis, including Germany's decisions to end its traditional restraint on supplying lethal weapons to war zones, increase its defense spending and halt a key natural gas pipeline linking it to Russia. Biden recently signaled his disappointment that, in terms of responding to Russia's aggression, India was not fully on board with other members of the "Quad" - a group also including Australia and Japan that his administration views as key to counteracting China's growing clout in the Indo-Pacific. India is "Somewhat shaky," the U.S. president said, while noting that Japan "Has been extremely strong" and so has Australia in dealing with Russia's aggression.

The U.S. Federal Communications Commission on Friday moved to add Russian cybersecurity company Kaspersky Lab to the "Covered List" of companies that pose an "Unacceptable risk to the national security" of the country. Also added alongside Kaspersky were China Telecom Corp and China Mobile International USA. The block list includes information security products, solutions, and services supplied, directly or indirectly, by the company or any of its predecessors, successors, parents, subsidiaries, or affiliates. The FCC said the decision was made pursuant to a Binding Operational Directive issued by the Department of Homeland Security on September 11, 2017 that barred federal agencies from using Kaspersky-branded products in their information systems. The security services provider, in response, said it was disappointed with the FCC's decision and that it's "Being made on political grounds" without any technical assessment of its products. "Kaspersky maintains that the U.S. Government's 2017 prohibitions on federal entities and federal contractors from using Kaspersky products and services were unconstitutional, based on unsubstantiated allegations, and lacked any public evidence of wrongdoing by the company," it added. The FCC's decision also mirrors an advisory released by Germany's Federal Office of Information Security this month against using the company's security solutions in the country over "Doubts about the reliability of the manufacturer." "No evidence of Kaspersky use or abuse for malicious purpose has ever been discovered and proven in the company's twenty-five years' history notwithstanding countless attempts to do so," the company's founder Eugene Kaspersky said on March 16.

A Chinese-speaking threat actor called Scarab has been linked to a custom backdoor dubbed HeaderTip as part of a campaign targeting Ukraine since Russia embarked on an invasion last month, making it the second China-based hacking group after Mustang Panda to capitalize on the conflict. "The malicious activity represents one of the first public examples of a Chinese threat actor targeting Ukraine since the invasion began," SentinelOne researcher Tom Hegel said in a report published this week. SentinelOne's analysis follows an advisory from Ukraine's Computer Emergency Response Team earlier this week outlining a spear-phishing campaign that leads to the delivery of a RAR archive file, which comes with an executable that's designed to open a decoy file while stealthily dropping a malicious DLL called HeaderTip in the background. Scarab was first documented by the Symantec Threat Hunter Team, part of Broadcom Software, in January 2015, when it detailed highly targeted attacks against Russian-speaking individuals since at least January 2012 to deploy a backdoor called Scieron. "If the attackers successfully compromise the victims' computers, then they use a basic backdoor threat called Trojan. Scieron to drop Trojan. Scieron. B onto the computer," Symantec researchers noted at the time. HeaderTip's connections to Scarab come from malware and infrastructure overlaps to that of Scieron, with SentinelOne calling the latter a predecessor of the newly discovered backdoor. "Based on known targets since 2020, including those against Ukraine in March 2022, in addition to specific language use, we assess with moderate confidence that Scarab is Chinese speaking and operating under geopolitical intelligence collection purposes," Hegel said.

North Korea's test of a big new intercontinental ballistic missile prompted the United States to press Friday for stiffer U.N. sanctions, but China and Russia showed little appetite for tightening restrictions that they have been trying to ease. A day after North Korea's first long-range test since 2017, U.S. Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield urged the council to condemn the launch and encourage North Korea to return to negotiations. China's United Nations Ambassador Zhang Jun and France Ambassador Nicolas DeRiviere confer as the U.N. Security Council meet concerning North Korea test-fire of its biggest intercontinental ballistic missile, Friday March 25, 2022 at U.N. headquarters. The Security Council originally imposed sanctions after the North's first nuclear test explosion in 2006 and has tightened them over the years, in response to further nuclear tests and increasingly sophisticated nuclear and ballistic missile programs. Veto-wielding China and Russia proposed last fall to lift sanctions that bar their neighbor from exporting seafood and textiles, limit its imports of refined petroleum products and prohibit its citizens from working overseas and sending home their earnings. Russian Deputy Ambassador Anna Evstigneeva said Friday that further sanctions would "Threaten North Korean citizens with unacceptable socioeconomic and humanitarian problems," while Chinese Ambassador Zhang Jun urged the council "To consider how to accommodate the DPRK's justified security concerns." Many council members expressed alarm at the launch and appealed to North Korea to stop.
FCC Commissioner Brendan Carr said the new designations "will help secure our networks from threats posed by Chinese and Russian state-backed entities seeking to engage in espionage and otherwise harm America’s interests."
The Federal Communications Commission on Friday added Russia's AO Kaspersky Lab, China Telecom Corp and China Mobile International USA to its list of communications equipment and service providers deemed threats to U.S. national security. In naming Kaspersky, the FCC announcement did not cite Russia's invasion of Ukraine or recent warnings by President Joe Biden of potential cyberattacks by Russia in response to U.S. sanctions and support of Ukraine. The Chinese Embassy in Washington said Friday that the FCC "Abused state power and maliciously attacked Chinese telecom operators again without factual basis. The U.S. should immediately stop its unreasonable suppression of Chinese companies."China will take necessary measures to resolutely safeguard the legitimate rights and interests of Chinese companies," it added. In October, the FCC revoked the U.S. authorization for China Telecom, saying it "is subject to exploitation, influence and control by the Chinese government. The FCC cited its prior decisions to deny or revoke the Chinese telecom companies' ability to operate in United States in its decision to add them to the threat list. In 2019, the FCC rejected China Mobile's bid to provide U.S. telecommunications services, citing national security risks. FCC Chair Jessica Rosenworcel said the agency worked closely with U.S. national security agencies to update the list and will add additional companies if warranted.

Scans performed on an ancient Tibetan seal last year revealed that it probably belonged to the son of a princess in the Tubo Kingdom, which was a consolidation of Tibetan tribes during the Tang dynasty. The carving on the seal says "Seal of nephew Azha King", which helped archaeologists determine that the tomb was connected to the king of Tuyuhun, a Tibetan tribe that ruled what is now modern-day Qinghai province in northwest China. While excavation on the ancient Tibetan tomb began in 2018, the seal was not found until late-2020, followed by a careful cleaning before it could be scanned. The Huangshan archaeological site in central China's Henan province provided an essential window into the Yangshao culture, one of the first Chinese societies. Scientists at the site have learned how Yangshao people leveraged waterways, how they interacted with other regions in China and what tools were necessary for people at the time.
A Chinese Australian journalist who has been held in China since August 2020 will be tried next week, the Australian government said Saturday
BEIJING - A Chinese Australian journalist who has been held in China since August 2020 will be tried next week, the Australian government said Saturday. Cheng Lei, who was a prominent journalist for China's state-run international network CGTN, was initially detained and later formally arrested on suspicion of supplying state secrets overseas. The Chinese government has notified Australia that her trial will be held on Thursday, Australian Foreign Minister Marise Payne said in a statement posted online. The National Press Clubs of the United States and Australia as well as the journalist's former CGTN colleagues and friends wrote open letters last year calling for her immediate release. "Cheng Lei's yearlong detention is an assault on journalism and on human rights," a U.S. National Press Club statement said. Australia has raised concern about Cheng's welfare and detention conditions. Payne's statement said that government officials last visited her on March 21.

Australia Prime Minister Scott Morrison said on Saturday there was "Great concern" across the Pacific after Solomon Islands confirmed it was creating a security partnership with China. The Pacific island nation on Friday said it was expanding ties with China to combat security threats and ensure a safe environment for investment as it diversifies security relations. A potential China security pact with Solomon Island has sparked concerns among U.S. allies Australia and New Zealand about Chinese influence a region where they have for decades held strong sway. Morrison said Sogavare on Friday indicated to Canberra that he appreciated Australia's ongoing support for Solomon Islands. Australia has previously expressed concern about the impact on regional security of military cooperation between China and Solomon Islands after a draft document outlining the proposed cooperation was leaked this week. On Thursday, a Solomon Islands official told Reuters a security deal with China covering the military would be sent to its cabinet for consideration. A small island nation around 2,000 km northeast of Australia, switched diplomatic recognition to Beijing from Taiwan in 2019, signalling China's growing influence in the Pacific.
Rising interest rates threaten to destabilise both financial asset values and the fiat currencies in which they are priced. This outcome is feared by the chattering classes who increasingly speculate about currency resets. So far, we have seen cryptocurrencie…
Except for a new currency mooted for cross-border trading purposes between Russia, its former Central Asian satellites and China only at the conceptual stage, all these plans fail in one important respect: as things stand, legally none of them can have the status of a currency. The introduction of new currencies is a topic moving increasingly into public debate driven by both the inflation dilemma faced by central banks and, recently, by the consequences of fiat currency sanctions against Russia. No one could be more ill-equipped to design a new currency than planners employed by governments. Aside from the economic problems that a volatile currency creates and the encouragement for Salvadorians to use a highly volatile ethereal asset as a medium of exchange, there is the problem that by declaring it as legal tender it exposes the population to a currency where ownership in law might not actually exist if it is not classed as currency in other jurisdictions. According to 24KG, which is a news agency based in Bishkek, only last week the Eurasian Economic Union and China confirmed that they will develop a new international currency. Figure 2 shows that compared with pricing in dollars, oil priced in gold is considerably more stable, calling into question the concept of indexing a new currency to commodities. The signal emanating from these half-baked ideas is that Glazyev and his team in devising a new currency have a limited understanding of money, currency, and credit.

While revelations are multiplying about the exactions committed by Ukrainian banditry over the past eight years, Westerners continue to perceive only the suffering of the Ukrainian civilian population. One observes with amazement the support that the former allies of the Great Patriotic War give to the Banderists, the Ukrainian neo-Nazis. THE DIPLOMATIC WAR. With things going badly for the Ukrainian army and its Banderist supporters, President Zelenski asked the Chinese embassy in Kiev to send a request for negotiations to the Kremlin on the second day of the conflict. These negotiations are going well, despite the murder by Ukrainian banditry of a delegate from their own country, the banker Denis Kireev, guilty in their eyes of having claimed that Ukrainians and Russians were Slavic brothers. THE IDEOLOGICAL WAR. The peace in Ukraine will not solve the Russian-US conflict opened since December 17, 2021. Later, during the Second Chechen War, the Straussians organized the alliance between Ukrainian Banderists and Chechen Islamists, with logistical support from the Milli Görüş. All fought side by side for the Islamic Emirate of Itchkeria. President Zelenski will address the French parliament, then President Biden will come to Europe to preside over an extraordinary NATO summit, and finally Pope Francis, fulfilling the prayer of the Virgin Mary at Fatima, will consecrate Ukraine and Russia to the Immaculate Heart of the Virgin.

China's foreign ministry on Monday described Beijing's position on Ukraine as similar to that of other developing countries, saying it was in the "Majority". Spokesman Wang Wenbin said these countries shared China's concern about being forced to pick a side and that they wanted neither war nor sanctions. "China is pushing back against that pressure by strengthening support among countries that don't want to be forced to pick a side." "The emphasis from China now is also about it not fearing pressure, and the communication with developing countries is part of that," Shi said. "A total of 141 countries voted in favour of condemning Russia in the UN, including countries that are very friendly to China like Cambodia," Shi said, adding that most developing countries had supported the resolution. "China still claims to be a developing country - a narrative that a lot of countries no longer buy," she said. "In the case of the Ukraine crisis, more developing countries voted against Russia than for it. I don't think it is a good example to showcase China's siding with developing countries."

The United States on Friday urged the international community to levy heavier sanctions against North Korea at a United Nations Security Council meeting convened after Pyongyang test-fired its largest-ever intercontinental ballistic missile. The test, conducted on Thursday, marked the first time North Korea launched such a powerful weapon since 2017. UN Security Council resolutions have banned all North Korean ballistic missile and nuclear tests and placed sanctions on its weapons programs. "Because of DPRK's increasingly dangerous provocations, the United States will be introducing a... Security Council resolution to update and strengthen the sanctions regime" that was adopted in December 2017, Thomas-Greenfield said, using the official acronym for North Korea. BEIJING: China is considering adding a mission to Venus to its plans for planetary exploration, according to a senior Chinese space official. In a recent space white paper, China had listed its interest in missions to Mars and Jupiter. According to Wu Weiren, the chief designer of China's lunar exploration programme, China is also considering adding Venus to its targets for exploration, Space. com reported. While Wu offered no further details of the potential mission, Chinese scientists had proposed a mission to Venus early in the last decade. In 2020, China launched its first interplanetary mission Tianwen 1 to Mars. The mission's orbiter and Zhurong rover remain at work on the Red Planet. Weiren told Chinese state media earlier this month that Tianwen 2, 3 and 4 missions are set to follow the Mars mission, the report said.

With no firm commitments on restoring the April 2020 status quo ante on Ladakh Line of Actual Control forthcoming from Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, the road to normalization of India-China bilateral ties appears to be a tough grind on the ground. While the Chinese State Councilor tried to decouple Ladakh LAC tensions with the overall relationship, it was quite evident from the candid conversations that the People's Liberation Army is dragging its feet and the disengagement process along the 597 km LAC would be a long haul on the ground. The massive military up-gradation of infrastructure by PLA in the name of Sinicization of Tibet all along the 3488 km LAC has pushed the Indian Army to respond in kind. Even though the possibility of PLA withdrawal from advance positions at patrolling point 15 or KongKa La area cannot be ruled out in near future, the adherence to bilateral 1993-96 border agreements by the PLA would be a challenge as the powerful Chinese Army reports only to President Xi Jinping as Chairman of the Central Military Commission with Foreign Minister Wang hardly exercising any influence on the Red Army strategic objectives along the LAC. One must recall that it took India and China nearly eight years to normalize the 1986 Sumdrong Chu stand-off caused by PLA transgressions in Arunachal Pradesh. Over the past decades, Beijing while relentlessly pursuing its military objectives on the LAC have asked New Delhi to look at the bigger picture to maintain normalization of ties. Adherence to 1993-96 border agreements, peace, and tranquility on the LAC with PLA in the barracks is the key to normal India-China bilateral ties. The message was that India will also dabble in the Chinese neighbourhood if the mutual security clause continues to be violated by Beijing making statements on internal affairs of India and supplying hardware to countries in the Indian sub-continent.

People outside China may not have heard of it, but the Black Pearl Restaurant Guide considers itself a worthy rival domestically to the influential Michelin Guide. A Chinese e-commerce services platform, the annual guide lists 736 restaurants in 26 cities, including Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and Chengdu as well as Paris, New York, Singapore, Bangkok and Tokyo. The 2022 edition will appear on March 31. The Black Pearl Restaurant Guide was launched in 2018, at a time when the restaurant industry had raised concerns about the credibility of the Michelin Guide's evaluation of Chinese cuisines. It billed itself as a guide to represent the taste of Chinese consumers from the Chinese perspective. "The Black Pearl is not only a restaurant guide, but responsible for exploring and promoting the Chinese culinary culture, and propelling the development of China's dining industry," it has stated previously. The Black Pearl Restaurant Guide considers itself a worthy rival to the Michelin Guide. When the Michelin Guide launched in China with its Shanghai edition in September 2016, it awarded 31 stars.

This pulled the 2022 share to 18%, and considering that the last month of the quarter is usually a strong month, we can assume that the country's plugin vehicle market share will end Q1 above the 19% mark, and the first half of the year should see it already above 20%. Another measure of the importance of this market is the fact that China alone represented over half of global plugin registrations last month! 2 - BYD Song Pro/Plus PHEV. BYD's midsize SUV is looking to replicate the success of the Qin in its category, and its rise and rise is proof of that, having scored a record result in the slowest month of the year! So it seems the Song PHEV is set for a 20,000-plus performance in March. 4 - BYD Qin Plus PHEV. The BYD Qin has been the bread and butter model for the Chinese automaker for a long time, with the PHEV version reaching 14,243 registrations in February, a somewhat underwhelming performance. Once the Dolphin lands, expect some serious price slashing from legacy OEMs. Looking at the remaining best seller table, the two highlights are the BYD Yuan Plus, jumping to #13, with 4,517 registrations in only its second month on the market, and the Tesla Model 3 up to #12, with 4,607 registrations. Below the podium, the BYD Tang PHEV has jumped four positions, to 8th, thus making it five BYDs in the top 8 positions. BYD has reinforced its leadership position, increasing its share by 2.2%. The Shenzhen automaker is looking to win its 9th automaker title this year, while the SGMW joint venture is stable in second place. For context, BYD was the 4th best selling brand in the overall market in China last month, and #1 among Chinese OEMs. How they will tackle the current disruption will say a lot about their future in the largest automotive market in the world.
